Just Smile and Nod…

How many calories in cigars and wine?

June29

BreakfastBunch of Grapes

Lunch: Food for Thought
If you want to know yourself,
Just look how others do it;
If you want to understand others,
Look into your own heart.

Supper: 3 Full Glasses of White Wine (2 of them courtesy of Nice people)

Late Night Snack: Cigar (gave 2 of them to poor people and hung out with them smiling and nodding while they talked to me in German, until one of them determined that I was a connected Mobster and stopped asking for money)

Violinist in the Metro

March10

A man sat at a metro station in Washington DC and started to play the violin; it was a cold January morning.
He played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time, since it was rush hour, it was calculated that thousands of people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.

Three minutes went by and a middle aged man noticed there was musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried up to meet his schedule.

A minute later, the violinist received his first dollar tip: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping continued to walk.

A few minutes later, someone leaned against the wall to listen to him, but the man looked at his watch and started to walk again. Clearly he was late for work.

The one who paid the most attention was a 3 year old boy. His mother tagged him along, hurried but the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. All the parents, without exception, forced them to move on.

In the 45 minutes the musician played, only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.

He collected $32.

When he finished playing and silence took over, no one noticed it.
No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written with a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days before his playing in the subway, Joshua Bell sold out at a theater in Boston and the seats average $100.

Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of an social experiment about perception, taste and priorities of people. The outlines were: in a commonplace environment at an inappropriate hour: Do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize the talent in an unexpected context?

One of the possible conclusions from this experience could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing the best music ever written, how many other things are we missing?

My additional thoughts would only be that so many people do things because they are “fashionable” that they forget to look at things with their own eyes, listen with their own ears, and appreciate anything with their own hearts.

Now I found this story at: egodialogues.com, however I am updating it with a YouTube video of him at the metro station.

I got it launched, finally after flat out ignoring the site since june, it’s launched, and I even made my today deadline.

It’s missing some links and sections right now, the old ones should be fairly easy to add. I deleted all the “questions” added to the ask-a-smartass section since the last time I answered. Also, I did not get the halloween makeover finished, will add different music, art, and one other yet to be mentioned item this week for sure.

Currently no RSS feed list for the blog, that will change, hopefully I can get to it before long, but today has been the first time I have had to work on this site for a LONG time so don’t hold your breath. Yes, I will add back the search engines (and more of them) etc…

Just wait and enjoy the simplicity of new design.

Disaronno On The Rocks (NOT Tanqueray)

June1

So to make up for my bad day, I am doing the only thing that seemed logical (at least to a 25 year old man). I am drinking. I mean I wanted to go destroy something, but that would cause me all sorts of problems… I also wanted to go buy more shit, actually I don’t want to, but I think I might need to. Well, for now I am not getting anything.

So instead I drink. Not to complete and total loss. I decided that since I can’t turn on tv and watch mindless tv since we don’t have cable/satellite, and I can’t output from my computer because…. well I am not going to re-explain that, and I have watched all my DVD’s as well as my roommate’s, that now I would play with my roommate’s new toy.

I should be more specific. His new birthday present. Everybody say “Happy Birthday Ken“.

So far I had 2 ol’ fassions (one of which I turned blue to try to quickly go through my stages of grief), and 2 or 3 Disaronno. Since I am still obviously capable of making a semi-logical blog post, I think I probably have a couple more coming after this.

In the mean time, since I have been playing with Ken’s new birthday present (again, once you read this… thanks… I will tell you how to work it later). I decided to take a picture of things that can be seen from my chair…. Yes, that includes myself … So you can all stop asking. Oh and if somebody from my going away party could please send me a picture of myself then, I will post that as well since I imagine it’s VERY different looking.

Good times… (made artifically by the use of alcohol)

Disaronno - James

Disaronno - world view 1

Disaronno - world view 2

Disaronno - Ok so perhaps it's not the view from my chair, but it's in my head

X-Men Dissapointment

May27

Ok so tonight I went out to BW3’s to watch UFC 60 (Ultimate Fighting Championship).? BW3’s was dead when we got there since we got there way to early, so we decided to go hang out at some dive bar and play pool for awhile.? Well my new found dart skills haven’t helped me any with pool at all, but it helped kill the time.

When we got back to BW3’s over an hour before the pay per view was to start, it was now PACKED.? We were lucky to get the last remaining booth.? Some of Rob’s friends showed up a little later and we all drank and watched the fights.? Well when that got done I still wanted to see X-Men so we went to a theater that was only a block or two away and managed to get bar seats (it’s the small things in life that give me happiness) and settled in for the movie.

Ok, for the hype of being the best X-Men movie ever… It really wasn’t at all.? I mean how can you fuck up an x-men movie anyways?? Especially since it the plot called for a war!!!! ? Well folks, it is possible to totally screw it up, and I am dissapointed and wish it would have been a matinee so I could of saved a few dollars…

I’d tell you some of the stupid shit they did in it, but they would all be plot spoilers and I’d hate to ruin your nice free telesync download that you will probably do now that you know the movie isn’t all that and a bag of chips…

So yeah, if you need a movie to go to the theaters to watch this week, make it DaVinci Code and you will get an interesting plot AND a hot foreign chick.

So, I’m Good @ Darts Now…

May26

Last night I wanted to see the new X-Men movie, so I called up Rob and said we should go to Joe’s Crab Shack and then out to see the movie.? Now, I haven’t been to a “Joe’s Crab Shack” since my mom got remarried.? I recalled liking their food and atmosphere, so it seemed like a good choice to go to.

The food was pretty good, and the T-Shirts the employees wore were hilarious (example:? Got Crabs?) It was however very loud there and I could hardly hear our waiter.? I think I really liked it when I was younger because they had let me drink underage ; )

Well, when that was done we went over to the theater and tried to get tickets to the movie.? It was sold out for another hour, which seemed reasonable to me but not Rob who whined that he had to work in the morning so a 10pm showing was to late. This seemed somewhat unreasonable to me since even when I had a job I would of been willing to watch a movie at 10pm, but I dropped it and we went out for a few beers at a bar he had told me about.

From his description I was surprised to see that all the bartenders were guys, and the music was played as kind of an irish jig or something… But they did have a “Real” dartboard.? Yes folks, a bar that doesn’t charge for darts AND trusts drunk people with metal darts!

That being open we laid claim to it and played darts until 10:30.? I am kind of happy, I have gotten quite good at darts.? It used to be back in Wisconsin I would never beat Rob at darts, but now he has to actually compete with me.? In this case I won 3 out of 5 games, but all of them we both did really well.? One of them we think was only 10-12 rounds.? I am still somewhat lousy at closing 20 and 18 (top half of board), but I am good at closing everything else including the bullseye.

Yep, Yep … Good Stuff

The Yesterday

May11

So here’s a question for you:

Q: How much does a $7 cooling fan cost? …. Think you know the answer?

A: $367

If you are wondering how I came up with that answer, it’s because I discovered this to be the price today when I went to buy a fan from Fry’s Electronics (as big as 18 best buy’s) only to end up also buying a new power supply and a 500GB hard drive.

The real bitch of it is, I didn’t even get the fan I needed. I had to get a 3 wire fan instead of a 2 since they didn’t sell 2 wire fan’s, so I will have to do some sodering. This fan was the only reason I drove to fry’s yesterday.

On the way home amidst the heavy traffic I decided my break pads / rotors were shot so I also had to stop at auto zone and buy some replacements. I bought the cheapest crap they had but that was still $88. Oh well, I can do it myself for less than a mechanic can.

Basic Instincts

May7

Watched both (yes there are two of them now) Basic Instinct movies today. Gotta say, for a 14 year gap between movies, Sharon Stone has still got a hella good body.

That’s it. That’s all I had to say.
